A Toast to my friends – A Song About Friendship and Connection | Nicole Victoria Lauren

A Toast to my friends” is a warm, upbeat track built on strings, rhythm, and shared moments. As one of the songs of gratitude to friends, it’s about the people who stay—through everything.

Welcome. Make yourself comfortable. Pull up a chair, maybe pour a cup of something warm, and stay as long as you’d like. You are truly invited and welcome here in this little corner of the digital world.

I’ve always felt that music is less of a performance and more of a shared space, a room we build together where the walls are made of sound and the floor is made of memory. Today, I’m opening the door to a piece of work that is very close to my heart. It’s called “A Toast to My Friends.”

If you’ve ever looked around a room and realized that the people standing next to you have become the architecture of your life, then this song is for you. It’s a quiet celebration of the ones who stay.

The Visual Anchor

Before we dive into the “why” and the “how,” I’d love for you to experience the song in its visual form. I often find that seeing the flicker of light or the movement of a shadow helps the ears hear what the heart already knows.

Prima Voca: The Heartbeat of Loyalty

At NVL Music, I follow a compass I call Prima Voca, the “first voice.” It’s that initial, unvarnished spark of intuition that shows up before the critics in our heads start talking about “genres” or “marketability.” For “A Toast to My Friends,” the first voice was a feeling of profound gratitude that felt both heavy and light at the same time.

A painterly illustration of friends gathered around a warm, glowing table at dusk, emphasizing connection and shared history.

We live in a world that moves so fast. We are constantly told to “level up,” to move on, to find the next best thing. But there is a sacred kind of magic in the people who don’t leave. The ones who see you through the “Rain Deluge” (as I explored in my previous release) and are still there when the clouds break.

This song isn’t a loud, boisterous party anthem. It’s a quiet toast. It’s for the friends who show up with a shovel when you’re buried, or a joke when you’re too serious, or just a quiet presence when words are too much. It’s about the chosen family we build over decades. When I was writing the lyrics for this song, I found myself thinking about the vulnerability of saying “thank you” to the people who know your worst parts and love you anyway.

It’s scary to be that honest, isn’t it? To admit that we need each other. But that’s what Prima Voca is all about, prioritizing sincerity over the trend of being “too cool to care.” I’d rather be goofy and earnest than polished and cold.

The Soundscape: A Fusion of Intention

When it came to building the house for these words to live in, I wanted a sound that felt both modern and timeless. I didn’t want to choose between the grit of a street beat and the elegance of a chamber hall. I wanted both, because friendship is both gritty and elegant.

The foundation of “A Toast to My Friends” is a mid-tempo R&B and hip-hop fusion. I’ve always loved the way a solid groove can hold space for deep emotion. To give it some edge, I brought in trap-influenced rock drums, they have that sharp, snapping energy that keeps the heart beating forward.

But then, there are the staccato strings. They dance through the track like the quick, shared glances between old friends. They provide a rhythmic tension that resolves into atmospheric synth pads, which I used to create a sense of vastness. I wanted it to feel like you’re standing on a hill at twilight, looking back at everything you’ve survived together.

The vocals are perhaps the most personal part of the production for me. I chose to alternate between a rhythmic rap-singing style and soaring belts. The rap-singing feels like a conversation, down-to-earth, honest, and direct. The belts are the moments where the emotion just overflows, where the “first voice” takes over and screams its gratitude to the rafters.

In my About Nicole Victoria Lauren page, I talk about centering the human voice as both instrument and storyteller. Here, the voice is the bridge between the digital drums and the analog strings. It’s the human element that ties the whole soundscape together.
